Women’s Empowerment
Bravia recognizes a commitment to furthering the education and the empowerment of women around the world. Our most recent venture has been in association with “The Warrior Queen Project,” as we continue to try and illuminate the voices of AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) women worldwide. Other recent activities include a participatory effort with “The Lotus Circle”, in which organizations work together across eighteen Asian countries to provide women and girls with the tools they need to change their lives, their communities and society at large.

Inspired by the Hollywood biopic of the legendary Warrior Queen of Jhansi comes a movement to unleash the Warrior Queen in all Asian and Pacific Islander women and girls.

The Warrior Queen Project
Inspired by the Hollywood biopic of the legendary Warrior Queen of Jhansi comes a movement to unleash the Warrior Queen in all Asian and Pacific Islander women and girls. The Warrior Queen Project tells the true stories of AAPI Warrior Queens past and present. By celebrating how we display Warrior Queen values in our modern lives, we empower each other to create the change necessary for a more inclusive and equitable society. Our use of “women” is open, expansive, and trans-inclusive. We inspire Asian and Pacific Islander women and girls to embolden the fierce Warrior Queen within themselves.

Major improvements were made to two schools in Kabul, which had been severely damaged by years of conflict. These include roof repairs, refurbishing classrooms, and renovating a conference hall used by the community at large. Together these schools provided education to over 6,000 Afghan girls. The Lotus Circle also launched a vocational training program in Can Tho, Viet Nam, for disadvantaged women and those at risk of trafficking and exploitation.

Empower
Furthering Bravia Capital’s belief in commitment to society, we also participate in conjunction with many other professional entities in “EMpower” (www.empowerweb.org) – a not-for-profit organization that provides at-risk youth in emerging countries with tools and resources they need to lead healthy, productive lives. Fund raising efforts around the globe provide Empower with the necessary funds to grant scholarships and other building blocks such as education, health and well-being, leadership and community engagement to 10-24 year-old in countries such as China, India, Indonesia, The Philippines and Vietnam. As in many developing countries, females face considerable obstacles in obtaining adequate education, freedom from sexual harassment or violence, and other gender related difficulties. Empower works to level the playing field in education by subsidizing girls school uniforms, school fees and even residences for rural girls. Along with the girls’ education, part of the program is designed to also educate parents, families and local environments on the advantages of keeping the girls in school. Bravia is proud to be a supporter of this valuable program in aiding youth and young adults in becoming healthy individuals and good citizens.

Known as the “mother” of a hundred opera forms (including Peking opera), Kunqu was recognized as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2001. To date, the China Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre has received 24 national awards for new productions and more than 75 awards for the company’s individual artists, among them numerous Meihua (Plum Blossom) awards, the highest recognition for Chinese traditional opera, as well as Baiyulan (Magnolia) awards, honouring all forms of theatrical arts. In the past few years, the China Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre received critical acclaim in its appearances at the Holland Festival (2011), Kennedy Center (2011) and the Sydney Opera House as guest artists at the Sydney Festival (2013). The group has also toured extensively in Japan, Finland, Russia, Sweden, Italy and Denmark, as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan. The Peony Pavilion is a play written by Tang Xianzu in the Ming Dynasty and first performed in 1598 at the Pavilion of Prince Teng. One of Tang’s “Four Dreams”, it has traditionally been performed as a Kunqu opera. The performance tradition has focused on the love story between Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei.
